Winter Break Cancellations

Students whose housing for Spring is cancelled during Winter Break, will need to review and follow the process outlined below.

Students will have 48 business hours after receiving confirmation of housing cancellation to schedule an appointment for check out. Appointments will be made by students through MyHousing. Students can change their check out appointments, but all appointments must occur within 5 days of cancellation confirmation.

The Winter Break Check-out Process begins December 19, 2022 and runs through January 11, 2023. Please note that the Residential Life office will be closed December 26 – January 2 and will not be available for check-out appointments.

Belongings not retrieved within five days of cancellation will discarded and you may be billed for a lock change.

Important Note: Students who fail to follow the check out process may be subject to lock change fees. Any items that are not retrieved by students (or a designated proxy) will be disposed of. Students who do not return their keys will be charged a lock change fee of $100 per door, $10 per mail key.

Check-out Appointments

Students will be able to return at any point in the day they choose for their check out appointment. Students must come to campus, pack up their belongings, empty their space, and return their keys during that day. Students will have card access to the builng for the day of their appointment only.  Card access will only be provided to students who select a check out appointment. Please review the move out process below, based on your cancellation date.

Inclement Weather/School Closings

Any UConn closings, delays, or early dismissals may impact scheduled appointments. Please check https://alert.uconn.edu to verify the status of the University. In the event of a school closing/early dismissal/delay, Residential Life staff will reach out to any students with scheduled appointments to reschedule.

 

Please note that the Residential Life office will be closed December 23 to December 27 and will not be accepting check-out appointments for that week.

Not Able to Return to Campus?

Students who cannot return to campus to move out during the five day timeframe can designated a proxy. The designated proxy can return keys and check out in place of the assigned student. Please contact the Department of Residential Life for assistance in designating a proxy. livingoncampus@uconn.edu

Already Moved Out and Returned Your Keys?

Students who moved out of their assignments and returned keys before departing for Winter Recess should email livingoncampus@uconn.edu with their name, student ID number, and a statement that they have already moved out and returned their keys. Students who send this email forfeit the opportunity to contest room damage, room cleaning, and lock change charges.

Move Out Materials Not Available

Residential Life is not able to provide any packing materials or staff assistance as students move out over Winter Break. No boxes, packing tape, dollies, or staff will be available to assist students as they move out.

Please review the following timelines based on when your Spring 2023 housing is cancelled.

Spring 2023 Housing Cancelled December 19 – December 21

  • Students whose Spring 2023 housing is cancelled during this time period must select a move out appointment through their MyHousing portal. These appointments will be available for selection once a student receives confirmation of their cancellation.
  • Student must come to campus on the date of their appointment, pack up their belongings, empty their space, and return their keys during that date.
  • Once the student is finished emptying their space, they must return their keys to the Service Desk, located in the Residential Life office in Whitney Hall, on the Garden Level. Failure to return keys will result in lock change charges. Keys returned outside of business hours must be placed in the Drop Box located at the rear of the building, and must be placed within the white envelopes.

Spring 2023 Housing Cancelled December 22 – January 4

  • Students whose Spring 2023 housing is cancelled during this time period must select a move out appointment through their MyHousing portal. These appointments will be available for selection once a student receives confirmation of their cancellation, no earlier than January 3, 2022.
  • Student must come to campus on the date of their appointment, pack up their belongings, empty their space, and return their keys during that date.
  • Once the student is finished emptying their space, they must return their keys to the Service Desk, located in the Residential Life office in Whitney Hall, on the Garden Level. Failure to return keys will result in lock change charges. Keys returned outside of business hours must be placed in the Drop Box located at the rear of the building and must be placed within the white envelopes.

Spring 2023 Housing Cancelled January 5 – January 11

  • Students whose Spring 2023 housing is cancelled during this time period must select a move out appointment through their MyHousing portal. These appointments will be available for selection once a student receives confirmation of their cancellation.
  • Student must come to campus on the date of their appointment, pack up their belongings, empty their space, and return their keys during that date.

Spring 2023 Housing Cancelled January 11 – January 13

  • Students whose Spring 2023 housing is cancelled during this time period must return to campus January 15to move out of their space and return their keys.
  • Student must come to campus on January 15, pack up their belongings, empty their space, and return their keys during that date.
  • Once the student is finished emptying their space, they must return their keys to the Service Desk, located in the Residential Life office in Whitney Hall, on the Garden Level. Failure to return keys will result in lock change charges. Keys returned outside of business hours must be placed in the Drop Box located at the rear of the building and must be placed within the white envelopes.
