* Vaccine Requirements for Housing Selection *
Students must be fully up to date with all University required vaccines and boosters in order to participate in the housing selection process. This status will impact students’ ability to live on campus and could impact the ability to participate in housing selection. If you are impacted, you will receive notifications via email from Residential Life.
Important Dates
Check the important dates timeline to know when you need to participate in the housing selection process.
Finding a Roommate
Students do not need a roommate to select a space on-campus. But if you would like to connect with other students looking for a roommate, make sure to complete your profile and roommate match on My College Roomie at My College Roomie
Request to Live with a New Incoming Student
Continuing students have the opportunity to request to live with a specific incoming student (first year and new transfer students). Continuing students should still select housing during their selection process, but must be willing to change assignments during the summer if our staff is not able to place an incoming student in your selected room.
How Current Students Can Request to Live with an Incoming New Student
Provide the following information to livingoncampus@uconn.edu during the time that roommate requests are accepted:
- Information Needed from New Student:
- Email Subject: New Student Requesting Current Student as Roommate
- Include your full name, 7-digit Student ID number, and the full name, 7-digit Student ID number, and assignment for the current student.
- Information Needed from Current UConn Student:
- Email Subject: Current Student Requesting New Student as Roommate
- Include your full name, 7-digit Student ID number, current assignment and the full name/7-digit Student ID number for the new student.
- Current students must include the following statement: "I agree to be reassigned/relocated in order to live with my preferred roommate"
Waiting Lists
Storrs Waiting List
Although all students may apply for housing, eligibility to live in residential housing is not guaranteed and is based on multiple factors including space availability, primary campus designation, academic standing, and academic status. Students who are eligible, but are not awarded on-campus housing, will be automatically placed on a wait list and will be offered housing as vacancies occur.
Residential Life will notify students via email of their status after their application is submitted. Students on the waiting list for housing will not be eligible to participate in the April housing selection process.
Stamford Waiting List
Priority for housing is given to returning students who applied on time, currently live on-campus, rising sophomores, international, out of state students not including parts of New York and students who are seeking specific degrees only offered at the Stamford Campus. If you are placed on the waiting list for housing, you will receive periodic updates in regard to your status during the spring semester. If housing can be offered, then you will receive an offer via your UConn email.
Waiting List Frequently Asked Questions
Am I on the waiting list?
Students who applied but did not participate in General Housing Selection are placed on the waiting list. If you are unsure whether you are on the list, please do not hesitate to ask us by emailing livingoncampus@uconn.edu
Why am I on the waiting list? What does it mean to be on the waiting list?
Students are placed on a waiting list for housing for various reasons, including but not limited to, submitting an application late, requesting to live on campus past 8 semesters, and requesting to live on campus after commuting/living off campus. Students should review the housing contract, section 8.4.2, to determine their specific status.
Will I get housing?
This depends on how many students are on the waiting list, and how many spaces are open. We will continually update students on their status.
Is the waiting list ranked? Where am I on the waiting list?
Generally, late applications and students re-admitted to UConn are offered housing first, followed by students who missed deadlines. Students with more than 8 semesters of living on campus are at the end of the list, as they are already familiar with the local area and are generally more successful living off campus than others who are newer to Storrs.
Since I am on the waiting list, should I start looking at other options off-campus?
This decision is entirely up to you. Please know, we are sometimes unable to offer housing until late July or early August, and housing is not guaranteed until you receive an offer and complete the Housing Guarantee Acceptance Form.
How are offers made?
Waiting list students will receive periodic updates via email throughout the spring and summer months about their status. This may include advice to begin seeking alternative housing options, or to remain on the waiting list for upcoming housing offers. If a student is offered housing via email, students will be instructed to complete the Housing Guarantee Acceptance Form by the deadline provided in the email offer. Depending on the month this occurs, students will then be assigned housing by ResLife staff or will have an opportunity to select their housing assignment.
How do I accept an offer?
Once you receive an email offering you guaranteed housing for the upcoming year, log into MyHousing and complete the Housing Guarantee Acceptance form. NOTE! Housing offers are time sensitive. If we do not receive your form in the designated time frame, we will cancel your housing application.
What if I find other housing? Can I cancel my application? Can I decline an offer?
- If you are no longer interested in on-campus housing for the upcoming year, please complete the Housing Cancellation form in MyHousing. Do not complete the Housing Guarantee Acceptance Form.
- If you cancel your housing application or do not complete the acceptance form by the deadline noted in your offer email, your housing application will be canceled and you will be removed from the waiting list.
- There is no fee to cancel through July 31 if you have not already signed the agreement form to accept a housing offer. Once you sign the acceptance form, cancellation fees will apply.
- Some students who campus-change to Storrs are required to live on campus for the academic year. Visit Residency Requirement Information to learn more.
I did not accept my housing offer by the deadline, but still would like housing. What do I do?
Email livingoncampus@uconn.edu to let us know you’re still interested in housing. We will reactivate your application and add you to the waiting list. You will need to wait for another housing offer. Please keep an eye on your inbox.
Will I know where I am going to live before I accept my housing offer?
No, students be assigned after they accept housing.
Where do students on the waiting list typically live?
There is no set area designated for students on the waiting list. Because we have more traditional double rooms compared to other room types, students on the waiting list can expect to be in a traditional double.
What if I do not like my assignment?
Watch the Important Dates page for information on the Room Change process.
Will I be able to live with my friends?
Our top priority is to be able to offer on-campus housing to students who need housing. Living in a specific room or with a friend is not always possible, however there are opportunities during the semester to do a Room Change.
- If you and your friend are both on the waiting list and both offered housing and are participating in the same selection process, you can search for spaces that will accommodate you together.
- If your friend has a confirmed empty space in their room/suite/apartment and you would like to be placed there, please email us at livingoncampus@uconn.edu when you accept your housing offer. We may be able to place you in this space, but cannot guarantee it.
- If living with a friend is non-negotiable, we recommend looking at other housing options off campus.
Can I request to live with an incoming student?
Selection processes for students on the waiting list and incoming students do not typically follow the same timelines. It is unlikely that we would be able to assign you to a room with a new incoming student.
Will I be able to live in a Learning Community or Honors housing?
Typically, these spaces are already full by the time students on the waiting list are offered housing, as they may have their own waiting list for students who are already guaranteed housing.
Unique Situations
Students Not Eligible to Participate in Housing Selection
Residential Life will place the following student groups into their housing assignments. These students are not eligible to participate in the housing selection processes and will not receive a pick time.
- Resident Assistants (RAs)
- Husky Village Residents
- Some students with approved residential accommodations through the Center for Students with Disabilities
- Special Interest Housing
- Veteran Student Community
- Gender Inclusive Housing
- Athletes who agree to be placed by Athletic Housing
Students Unavailable at Their Scheduled Pick Time
In this scenario, you have two options:
- Enter MyHousing at a later time during your selection period to make your selection, or
- Request a proxy to enter housing selection at your scheduled time and select a space for you. Email livingoncampus@uconn.edu at least 48 hours prior to your selection time with the following:
- Email Subject: Proxy Request
- Full name
- Student ID number (PeopleSoft number) or NetID
- Selection date and time
- A rank-ordered list of at least four halls/areas or room types you would hope to select
- A staff member will enter the housing selection at your scheduled time to pick a room on your behalf
Learning Community Room Selection
- Students can only match with roommates who are accepted into the same Learning Community.
- Rooms in Learning Community Selections are designated for continuing students and are set per our collaboration with First Year Programs and how the Learning Community directors would like the floor(s) structured.
- Once students agree to be a member of a Learning Community, they will receive a selection time only for that Learning Community. This means that students who participate in Learning Community selection will not have the option to participate in the general room selection process or to select housing with students who are not in their Learning Community.
Honors Housing Selection
- Honors students will need to decide in advance of selection which housing selection process they would like to apply for and must indicate their preference on the housing application by February 14, 2025. This process will allow Honors students the ability to select a space in Honors housing with an Honors student, or to live with a non-Honors student outside of Honors housing.
- Students who opt into Honors housing will be asked to complete an acceptance form to agree to live in Honors housing and participate in the Honors housing selection processes. This agreement will be binding until the summer room change, at which time a student in Honors housing could request to move into general housing on a space-available basis. Students who initially opt for general housing can also request to be assigned into Honors housing during the summer room change process, but this would also be dependent on available spaces.
- Honors students who wish to update their preference on the housing application can email livingoncampus@uconn.edu
Upper Division Honors Selection
- Students will be assigned a selection time based on earned credits and will pick housing with all other students in the Upper Division Honors housing selection process. Students who do not complete the acceptance form by the stated deadline will be automatically removed from the Upper Division Honors process and added into the General Housing selection process.
- If a student in this process wishes to select housing with a roommate/group, all members of the group must be part of the Upper Division Honors process and be mutually matched in MyHousing prior to selecting housing.
- Students in this process must select a space either in Snow Hall (South Campus), Connecticut Hall or depending on the number of applications Shippee Hall and will not be able to select a space in any other hall. If a student is hoping to live in a suite style space and finds that all suite spaces were already selected before their selection time, they will need to pick a space in Shippee during their selection time.
General Housing Selection:
- Students who do not request Upper Division Honors on their fall housing application will participate in the general housing selection with all students on campus who are not part of a special interest community. Selection times will be based on earned credits and students will be assigned a pick time with all eligible students for general selection.
- Students in this process will be able to view all available spaces on campus that are not part of a special interest area and will be able to pair up with other students in general selection, including Honors students not living in Honors housing.
CSD Housing Accommodations
Students approved to receive housing accommodations that are guaranteed housing will have the opportunity to indicate how they prefer to have their accommodation fulfilled. Students approved after a set date in the Spring will go through general selection. If they are unable to select a space that meets their accommodation, Residential Life will work with them during the summer room change process and, if necessary, during the academic year, to fulfill their accommodation.
Students that register with CSD and request a single room accommodation must provide a self-report, submit supporting documentation and engage in the interactive process with the CSD. If they are approved, they are able to participate in the CSD Single Room Selection process.
Singles available in the CSD Single Room Selection process will only include singles in Traditional Residence Halls. Singles in Suites and Apartments will not be included in this process.
If a student has a single room accommodation approved prior to March 5, 2025 and are guaranteed housing they may participate in the CSD Single Room Selection or go through General Selection. Students are not guaranteed to receive a single room in the General Selection process.
If a student has an apartment accommodation approved prior to March 5, 2025 and are guaranteed housing they may participate in General Housing Selection with a priority selection time. Students will have the opportunity to indicate the roommate they wish to live with by being "mutually matched" in their MyHousing account. It is important to review the housing selection process detailed on this page.
If a student has multiple accommodations approved prior to March 5, 2025 and are guaranteed housing they may agree to be assigned by Residential Life and have the opportunity to indicate 3 areas of preference. The name of their preferred roommate will need to be emailed to livingoncampus@uconn.edu by March 5, 2025.
If a student has an accommodation for "air conditioning" and are guaranteed housing they may participate in the CSD A/C Selection process to guarantee a room with an air conditioner unit or go through General Selection. If a student does not participate in the CSD A/C Selection process, they are not guaranteed to select a room in a central air-conditioned building and will not be provided an air conditioner unit in their room if the building does not have central air conditioning.
Students with accommodations not in the above categories will participate in General Housing Selection and will receive a selection time. It is important to review the housing selection process to learn more about being "mutually matched" in their MyHousing account.
All students with approved housing accommodations and guaranteed housing will receive notification of which process they will have the opportunity to engage in as well as specific instructions to follow.
Students Studying Abroad
Students who are planning to study abroad for fall but plan to return to campus for spring should still complete the fall housing application by the indicated deadline, as well as, participate in the room selection process. Once your study abroad plan is approved, you will be able to cancel fall housing without penalty fees before July 14, and will be guaranteed spring housing as long as you continue to meet all application deadlines for spring housing.
- We advise students not to cancel fall housing until they are 100% committed to their study abroad program.
- Students can apply for spring housing when the spring housing application opens in the preceding fall semester.
UCAELI and Incoming Exchange Students
Incoming UCAELI and Exchange students who apply for housing by June 1 can select their own fall housing assignment in an online housing selection over the summer. Those who apply for housing after June 1 will be placed into housing by staff and will receive their assignments the first week of August.
