Winter Recess Housing

All students who plan to stay on campus at any point during Winter Recess, December 18, 2023-January 14, 2024, must fill out a Winter Recess Housing Application. Students living in apartment areas or Husky Village are required to fill out this application so Residential Life has accurate records of all students who plan on being here at any point over Recess. Students living in these areas will not be charged to stay over Recess.

Students who are planning to stay on campus for Winter Recess Housing are unable to participate in the Mid-Year Room Change Process. If a student plans to remain on campus for Winter Recess and wishes to change assignments for the Spring Semester they must wait until the Spring Room Change Process which opens approx. 2 weeks after the semester begins.

 

Winter Recess Housing Application – Available November 1st – December 15th at www.reslife.uconn.edu/myhousing

  • All students who will need on-campus accommodations at any point during Winter Recess (December 18, 2022-January 14, 2024) must submit the Winter Recess Housing Application
  • When filling out the application please indicate the reason you are staying on campus. If the reason you are staying does not match one of the options, please choose other.

 

Winter Recess Housing Charges – Traditional and Suite Style - Placed on Fee Bill in January 2024

Students who live in traditional and suite style housing can choose to either remain on campus for all of Winter Recess or for part of the break.

  • Remain on campus/have access to your residence hall for the entire break period. This includes occasional days throughout the whole break.
  • Remain on campus/have access to your residence hall for the first portion of break. This includes any dates from December 18th after 12pm to December 29th at 4pm.
  • Return to campus/have access to your residence hall for any part of the second portion of Winter Recess. This includes any dates from January 3, 2024, up to opening weekend.

  • Winter Recess Housing Charge – Entire Break - $750

Students in Apartments, Husky Village, or Stamford Housing—dropdown

Students living in apartment areas, Husky Village, or Stamford Housing are required to fill out this application so Residential Life has accurate records of all students who plan on being here at any point over Recess. Students living in these areas will not be charged to stay over Recess.

 

Winter Recess Dining Options

All students approved to live in a dorm/suite during Winter Break are required to have a meal plan. Our McMahon Dining unit will serve all meals during Winter Break.

  • Fall residential meal plans end with dinner on Sunday, 12/17/23 and the Winter Break meal plans begin on Monday, 12/18/23.
  • All residents not residing in an on-campus apartment complex are required to have one of the two, Winter Break meal plans. They are:
    • Meals 7 days per week: $189.00/ week (Sunday – Saturday)
    • Meals 5 days per week: $135.00/week (Monday-Friday only)
  • Winter Break meal plans include: 1 breakfast, 1 lunch, and 1 dinner per day. Unused meals do not rollover to the following day or week.
  • Students enrolled in academic, Winter Session classes (12/26/2023 – 1/12/2024), or working/interning on campus, may change their meal plan up until their third day living on campus, by contacting our office.
  • Students assigned to an apartment will not be assigned a meal plan. However, options are available to purchase through our office.
  • Meal plans cannot be pro-rated and are billed for the same weeks you are housed in a dorm/suite.
  • Students who are required to have a meal plan and do not select one will automatically be assigned the 7-day meal plan for $189.00 per week.

 

Eligibility for Winter Recess Housing
Students on University probation will not be permitted to remain on-campus. Students who wish to live on campus over Winter Recess must have both a Fall 2023 and Spring 2024 Assignment and cannot have participated in Mid-Year Room Change

Students can request to remain on-campus for the following reasons:

  • Enrolled in Winter Intersession course.
  • Working for University department (must provide proof of employment)
  • Academic internship (must provide proof of participation)
  • Affiliated with University team requiring accommodations during Winter Recess
  • International Student unable to return home.

 

Academic Internship/Employment Verification
Students who are participating in an academic internship or who are working on-campus during Winter Recess must provide proof of their employment/participation to Residential Life. An email from the employment or academic supervisor is sufficient.

Email with the following information to livingoncampus@uconn.edu.

  • Include student’s first/last name, 7-digit student ID number or NetID.
  • State that student will be completing internship or is employed by department.
  • Dates of internship/employment

 

Winter Recess Staffing & Policies
Students remaining on-campus during Winter Recess will have limited access to Residential Life staff. Due to the holidays and reduced staffing, residents who remain on-campus during this time must contact Operations Center at (860) 486-3113 if they are locked out of their residence. Facilities related incidents that need immediate attention need to be reported to (860) 486-3113. All emergencies should be reported to the UConn Police Department at 911.

Students must adhere to all University policies during Winter Recess. Please refer to the Housing Contract and the Temporary Health and Safety Procedures for information regarding specific policies. Students may be asked to leave housing if policies are violated. Remaining on campus during a time when classes are not in session is a privilege, and thus students are expected to uphold a high level of responsibility while staffing is limited.

Overnight guests will not be permitted during Winter Recess, due to limited staffing and specific billing policies.

 

Application & Cancelling Winter Recess Housing
The application will be available until December 15, 2023. Any student who does not submit an application will not have access to the residence halls during Winter Recess. Any student who requests to cancel their Winter Recess housing after 5:00pm, December 18, 2023, will be charged the partial Winter Recess housing fee of $375. The Winter Recess Housing Fee cannot be appealed.
